My
contribution to this show has been the design of the exhibition
boards. It was my job to present traditional craft techniques as
a new and exciting inspiration for contemporary designers and artists.
From
the very start we all agreed that the boards should have a natural
organic form and stay away from the standard corporate trade show
format. My design concept took inspiration from the content of the
exhibition by using the weaving technique of basket making. The
graphic forms I used in the design of the boards are founded on
natural patterns. The grid and logo are based on the ‘golden
section’ – a naturally occurring relationship between
shapes that occurs in currach building amongst other things.
All
the materials used in the exhibition are sustainable. Both the paper
and the strings are made from recycled paper and cotton. The support
mechanisms used to hang the boards can be recycled, leave no mark
on the building and are re-usable. It was vital that the materials
I used stayed true to the overall aim of the project – to
show everyone that traditional materials can be surprisingly beautiful
and relevant in contemporary design.
